Because at last night’s RAW it was a subject again I did some research on Dean Ambrose’s title defenses (basically on OnlineWorldofWrestling). Like JBL once again mumbled that he would never defend his United States Championship belt. On May 19, 2013 at Extreme Rules Dean Ambrose defeated WWE United States champion Kofi Kingston to win the title. And that was followed by these (to date) 25 title defenses:

As you can see, until mid November he was quite busy with defending his belt. Although in Live Events it’s highly unlikely that there will be a title change, these matches are still title defenses. But although if you cancel out these Live Event defenses there are still eleven televised title matches in which Dean Ambrose had retained his belt. Certainly some nitpickers out there will state that Dean Ambrose most of the time had Rollins and Reigns around. So, a clear televised win he only got for FOUR times. But these are the rules: you are able to retain by disqualification or by count-out (when you flee the match for example like AJ Lee did at yesterday’s RAW). And Ambrose didn’t defend his title during December and January because he was stuck in this little feud between CM Punk and The Shield. Hope this was slightly helpful and gave you an idea what real rubbish is talked by fans and commentators in WWE.

And now for RAW: but first I have to come round with a thought on this Shield being face now thing. Specifically Dean Ambrose I can’t see as a face but also not as a heel. I just see in him a character he has established for over ten years now. Sometimes there are moments that remind me of his Jon Moxley character, then there are shades of his Dean Ambrose of FCW. This character and what he now does with him in the ring now comes really natural for him. It’s most likely his very deep self that he just allows to overcome himself inside the ring and that’s because it can’t be classified as face or heel. Better definition really would be tween, which means between face and heel. In contrary to the title of this article I don’t really think that he desperately tries to act like a face now. He just does what he always does but in lot of variation so he won’t ever be boring. John Cena is hated for being boring to most adults; but Dean Ambrose is hated for overselling, for his facial expressions, for whatever else he does in the ring, but definitely not for any sort of boredom [got the following GIF-set from wrestling-giffer]:

He simply lives and does in the ring what he enjoys about watching wrestling himself: entertainment and fun. If that is considered as heel or face he maybe just doesn’t care. With him still being part of The Shield obviously help the heel / face cause a lot because for myself I always couldn’t think of Roman Reigns as a heel while Seth Rollins is very likeable as a face. It just annoys me that people in the audience chant for Roman Reigns when he isn’t even part of the match. Certainly later on he still had to do his spear and got the biggest pop for it. Somehow it reminds me on what William Regal has written in his autobiography that I’m currently reading: As a rookie when teamed up in tag team matches with Big Daddy for example, Regal was always beaten up and then at the end of the match Big Daddy was in the ring for around four seconds to get the easy win and the laurels from the audience. Nothing has changed really since the late 80s.

Still in the first hour of RAW The Shield had a cameo appearance during the match Los Matadores vs. Rybaxel to distract Rybaxel so Los Matadores could get the win. Afterwards Rybaxel were beaten up by The Shield plus they could hit their Triple Powerbomb on Ryback. Revenge mission, part 1 completed.

Later on they interrupted Stephanie and Triple H backstage to ask them if they had something to do with them being beaten up by Kane & NAO et al. last week. Triple H of course denied it but Stephanie made up their match against The Real Americans.

Dean Ambrose

And for this match it actually was Ambrose & Rollins again together against The Real Americans and this is great really. Because these two are just working perfect together (as you can see in this GIF above once again by wrestling-giffer). You can also see the chemistry between Ambrose and Cesaro (which isn’t a big surprise given the two of them are friends and often train together). But most important: Ambrose did sport his barbed wire belt again! DA also continues doing his tribute to Nigel McGuinness and his half performed Regal Stretch. I just love it how he assimilate moves not to steal from others but to tribute these wrestlers who aren’t (any more) in WWE (or on the big screen). In the end Seth Rollins got the win for The Shield and after the Dark Match they had the opportunity to send a message to the WWE Universe in Brooklyn. And Seth Rollins here certainly found the right words (including the dark match vs. The Wyatts before):

For the rest of RAW: I didn’t care.

  1. I just had to comment here. I caught this article through FSN Wrestling News which, in essence, reblogged you. So based on my comment, please direct all thank you’s, positive or negative to the fine folks at FSN Wrestling News. You write very well, by the way.

I have said it on many blogs. What the WWE needs is a gladiator that is a badass, and a no bullshit type of guy. The WWE Universe is STARVING for this. This is why I believe that they chant for Roman Reigns on a constant basis. This is why CM Punk is still so popular even though he has not wrestled going on two months now. These are the type of guys that when they get in the ring they are all business. No side show facial expressions. Just get in there and the focus is to decimate their opponents!

I believe that Dean Ambrose could be this guy. All he would need to do is to adopt one mantra. If he copped a “I’m done talking and it’s time to get down to business” attitude he would go far. All he would need to do is to say stuff like, “I will do all my talking in the ring when I wrestle.” and say nothing more, he would have a following bar none.

Do we learn nothing from story telling? In Rocky 3, Clubber lang said virtually nothing for the first half of the movie. He was a badass! Then he started talking crap and Rocky shut up and said nothing for the 2nd half of the movie. Rocky turned out to be the badass! I think Dean Ambrose needs to cop this attitude. Until then, I think he is just viewed as another overplayed nut job!

    Just my two cents…..

    1. Thank you very much for this comment! Given that English isn’t my first language I sometimes have my doubts if my words come out the right and understandable way.

On your thoughts: Roman Reigns for me isn’t a badass. He looks way too nice for that which also is one of his biggest advantages, of course. Batista looks terrible these days and obviously isn’t this type of guy who gets the WWE Universe behind himself. But since you mentioned the WWE Universe and what they are supposed to be starving for: what I’m writing in this blog isn’t probably the common thoughts or wishes of the WWE Universe. I don’t really like Roman Reigns (mostly probably because he’s being pushed in favour to Ambrose and Rollins) but also because he can’t surprise me due to his limited moves.

I don’t like these ‘larger than life’ guys because I am no person who likes to follow strong guys but like to identify myself with some guys. I search for similarities and when I feel some connection I most certainly will become a fan. That was the case with CM Punk and Dean Ambrose. I like this crazy part, the ability to cut great promos. And the reason why Ambrose didn’t speak very much in the recent past probably is because Seth Rollins can do better face promos. When Rollins / Ambrose are heels again most certainly DA will again do their heel promos.

So, your example with the Rocky movie is great but I think that the WWE won’t do anything that requires a certain degree of intelligence within the WWE Universe. But for Dean Ambrose’s promos I think that’s alright because I personally would really miss it if he would only do the talking in the ring from now on. But I definitely won’t miss the silly promos they had to do with this animal stuff, you know: these camels, llamas, mustangs and unicorns.
